Dutch state and industry take joint initiative for coordinating re-use and decommissioning

Amsterdam, 10 October 2017 – Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), representing the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and NOGEPA, branch organization for the national oil and gas industry, officially launched Nexstep, National Platform for Re-use & Decommissioning on Tuesday 10 October, during the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference.

As and when oil and gas fields come to the end of their production life, the related infrastructure will become available for other uses. The energy transition presents an opportunity to re-use existing elements to complement renewable investments before their eventual safe and efficient decommissioning.

Nexstep’s ambition is to enable this development. Its mission is to serve as an inclusive and collaborative umbrella organization that coordinates, facilitates and seeks dialogue on the re-use and decommissioning agenda for oil and gas infrastructure in the Netherlands.

During the launch Jan Willem van Hoogstraten, CEO of EBN and Jo Peters, Secretary General of NOGEPA gave some insight in the background of the project and the need for a dedicated organization.

Jan Willem van Hoogstraten: “In November 2016 the plan for a national platform was presented in the Masterplan for Decommissioning & Re-use. Here we described what a structured and collaborative approach could look like. Early 2017 the decision was taken to put this plan into practice, with Nexstep as the concrete result today.”

Jo Peters: “Over the next two decades a vast increase in decommissioning activities is to be expected. We believe that Nexstep – as a dedicated and multi-stakeholder platform – enables us to best identify and achieve re-use opportunities and realize synergies in decommissioning.”
