The first offshore platform to be decommissioned was done in 1988. In the Dutch Continental Shelf, 31 platforms have already been removed. Of the platforms already decommissioned, it was possible to relocate and reuse 15 Offshore platforms. In addition, one more platform is waiting for re-use. They have been fully or partially relocated and re-used for the development of other fields. Removal of the remaining platforms is expected to take place over the coming decades.

Until now, individual operating companies execute their projects as isolated activities. The aim of Nexstep is to improve the efficiency of decommissioning activities by collaborating in joint decommissioning projects and by sharing expertise, best practices and lessons learned.
