Het eerste platform dat buiten bedrijf werd gesteld, is in 1988 verwijderd. In het gebied van de Nederlandse Noordzee zijn reeds 31 platforms verwijderd. Van de reeds ontmantelde platforms was het mogelijk om 15 offshore platforms te verplaatsen en gedeeltelijk opnieuw te hergebruiken bij de ontwikkeling van andere velden. Daarnaast wacht nog één platform op herbestemming. De resterende platforms zullen naar verwachting de komende decennia worden verwijderd.

Tot nu toe voeren de afzonderlijke exploitatiemaatschappijen hun projecten uit als onafhankelijke activiteiten. Het is de intentie van Nexstep de efficiëntie van de activiteiten die gemoeid zijn met ontmanteling te verbeteren door samen te werken aan ontmantelingsprojecten en door expertise, beste praktijken en geleerde lessen te delen.

Ontmantelingsactiviteiten vinden momenteel plaats in de buurt van Roswinkel en Berkel.
